Gûzelyurt, previously called Gelveri was inhabited since the Palaeolithic period and throughout history by the Hattis, Hittites, Medes, Persians and was part of the kingdoms of Cappadocia as well as the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman empires.
The Ihlara Valley – ½ day or full day walk
The hotel offers transport and a guide to hike along this magnificent 14 km long canyon, carved out by the Melendiz River, strewn with about one hundred churches. Short drive to the beginning point of our walk. One can visit quite a few of the churches, some decorated with frescoes. You can begin near the village of Ihlara and walk all the way down to Yaprakhisar (Selime) or you can exit the valley half way at the little village of Belisirma (2:30 hours of walking). The walk along the river is pleasant and not too difficult. At the end of valley, you’ll come out between the villages of Yaprakhisar and Selime. Turn to your right and walk on another 5 minutes to the impressive monastery complex of Kale. Right next to it, there’s also a 13th century Seljuk tomb. Short drive back to Gûzelyurt.
The hotel offers transport and a guide to hike along this 4.5km long valley strewn with about 50 rock churches and monasteries (about 2.5 hours) at the bottom of the old village of Güzelyurt. At the end of the valley, you’ll climb up towards the village of Sivrihisar and from there, walk onto to the Red Church set in impressive surroundings. Short drive back to Güzerlyurt.
Starting from our stable, we’ll ride through small fairy chimneys towards the High church nested on top of a rock allowing us a breathtaking view over the area and the Hasan Dag mountain. We’ll pass through vineyards and vegetable patches to the old village of Güzelyurt. Its streets are lined with old cave homes and sculpted Greek houses. Return to the stable.
A wonderful ride down the biggest canyon in Cappadocia, carved out of the rocks by the Melendiz river. Leaving from our stable, we’ll pass though fields and vineyards to reach an outlook spot dominating the 100m deep Ihlara canyon. We’ll enter the canyon through the village of Belisirma and follow the river through luscious orchards and gardens down to a forest for fairy chimneys in the village of Selime. About 6 hours of horse riding. This ride is not recommended for beginners.
